Perhaps.

If you ask Ed, he'll say he's vegan for a few reasons, not the least of which is his health. He gambles with money, not with his health. So he's beat the odds and avoiding cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol by eating a plant-based diet. Luck still plays a role and he still might wind up with some terrible disease more commonly associated with a meat-centric diet, but for now he's healthy and happy.

Ed Miller and his co-authors will be self-publishing or using another publisher for the book previously titled Professional No Limit Hold 'Em Part Two. Mason Malmuth stated that he's finally releasing control of the project. And Matt Flynn, one of the authors, says:

"Separation from 2+2 will substantially speed up the process. We were strongly demotivated. Now we're motivated."

The NPA paid archive is available. Call me a liar. I said I didn't think it would happen. Apparently I was wrong.

The way it seems to work now is a bit odd. First you have to register for the website. Then you buy the articles. You can buy one article at a time or you can register for the entire month and read what you want during that month.

Ed Miller's Website Changes and Mason Malmuth

Recently, there have been some changes at Ed Miller's blog. He's disabled viewing of his archive posts. Anything older than 30 days isn't viewable. Supposedly, in the future those blog posts will be available for viewing, but only at a fee.

(This fan is doubtful that will come to fruition, but only time will tell.)

There have been a number of rumors about why these changes have occurred. The rumors are all over the board, including suspicions of CardPlayer magazine, the IRS, Miller's wife Elaine, and others, but recently the truth has come out.

Matt Flynn wrote:

Mason wanted Ed Miller to stop putting content on NPA. The reason given was he thinks high-quality searchable internet content will kill book sales. He pressured stoxpoker to get Ed to make his site less available. Ed did so. Mason then asked us PNL authors to drop the contract. We did not do so. There ya go.

And then Miller wrote this on his forums:

What Matt Flynn said in this thread is true. Mason Malmuth is the one who has been trying to force changes here at NPA. It started in about September of last year, and it's gone from an initial demand that I shut the website down entirely to a letter from his lawyer demanding that I remove all articles older than 3 months to threats of breaking deals with Stoxpoker if they couldn't convince me to alter the site.

I struck a deal with Stoxpoker designed to appease Mason and keep him off Stoxpoker's back. I'm not sure it's the right thing for Stoxpoker, and I'm not sure I did the right thing either.

This NPA stuff is just the tip of the iceberg with Mason. He's been pressuring, harrassing, and smearing me and the people I work with (Matt Flynn, Sunny Mehta, the Stoxpoker guys) for nearly two years now. He says it's about book sales or this or that, but there's no doubt in my mind that his main motivation is purely personal. He's trying to “get” me any way he can think of.

I hate this kind of stuff. I just want to talk about poker. My original strategy was to keep doing my thing and not to dignify Mason's nonsense with a response, but it's pretty clear now that Mason is going to keep pushing and pushing until I can't ignore him anymore. I should have nipped it in the bud, but I didn't, and now we'll see where it goes from here.

So, sounds like Mason Malmuth is behind all this. It's not Miller being greedy, it's not the IRS on his back, it's not CardPlayer magazine claiming rights to Ed's writing, it's Mason Malmuth being a control freak.

Can't say it comes as a surprise.

NPA Archives Unavailable

Ed Miller has changed his website. He says:

"My original vision for this site was that it would be free to read. I always intended to make money from it, but I wanted that money to come from advertising, from donations, and from other sources, not from my readers." [...]
"For about the last nine months, behind the scenes, I’ve been receiving pressure and threats aimed at forcing me either to shut down Noted Poker Authority or to make the vast majority of its content available for pay only (sounds ridiculous, I know). Up until now I’ve refused. But it’s become unpleasant and disruptive enough to me that I’m giving in. I’m not proud of it, but when I weighed my options this one made the most sense for me personally."

What's the end result? Well, so far:

"Effective yesterday, all articles on the site older than 30 days are unavailable."

And there are murmurs about who is doing this to Ed. The discussion at 2+2 was removed, which indicates some culpability. There are rumors that either 2+2 or StoxPoker or both are involved. And then there are rumors CardPlayer is doing it.

But Ed hasn't verified anything yet, so this fan is going to stay mum.

Ed Miller's fifth book, Professional No Limit Hold’em: Volume II, is making good progress.
Miller says,

“I’ve been on the ‘one book per year’ schedule since Small Stakes Hold’em came out in 2004, and I expect to finish 2008 with an unblemished 5-for-5 record.”

He also says,

"Sunny and I have been playing a lot of online 6-max lately, so rest assured that the book will contain a lot of stuff that will be immediately useful in those games."

Pure Math Poker: Winning in Wild Games

Ed Miller wrote an article about a foolproof strategy for beating wild no-limit hold'em poker games. The whole article has all the details but if you want the quick step-by-step lesson, here it is (bullets added):

Buy in for 40 to 60 big blinds.
Wait for strong starting hands: pocket pairs, big aces, and K-Q.
If you have a medium or big pocket pair, or if you have two big cards, raise preflop.
With small pocket pairs, or on the button with your somewhat weaker hands, you can just limp.
If the pot is raised and you hit the flop well, move all-in...
Your goal is to get your money in early with good hands so there are no tough decisions.

Poker Is a Challenge, a Hobby, a Great Way to Earn Some Easy Money. But It's Not a Stress-free Career.

Ed Miller says:

"...a few years ago I played poker for the majority (and for some time 100%) of my income. Today most of my income comes from writing and other projects, and playing is a part-time thing for me. I’m happier now."
"...I didn’t go busto. Nor did I rack up millions of dollars as a full-timer. I quit playing full-time with a moderately bigger bankroll than I had when I started"

So why would a winning poker player switch from playing full-time to playing only as a hobby? In an article by Matt Maroon recommended by Ed Miller, Maroon writes:

"I once met someone who quit a job as an air traffic controller, long considered the most stressful job in existence, to play poker for a living. He did it for a year and claimed to have made about 25% more than he would have at his job, but went back to his old career because, as he said, it was 'far less stressful'."

The Fan knows about this stress. Poker players, the ones who have souls at least, tend to get a little down on poker every now and then. It has to do with a lot of things (cheaters, poor card room management, fewer fish, politics/poker criminalization) but variance coupled with loneliness is a big reason winning poker players quit.

When you play poker for a living, you don't just work for yourself, you work by yourself. Everyone else at your table is working against you*. (If someone at the table is working with you, that's cheating.) The dealer is the only one who doesn't have an interest in seeing you fail, but they have no interest in seeing you succeed either. The poker world is a lonely world.

Variance, the randomness of the game, is very difficult for many people to deal with. Humans have a natural tendency to find patterns and uncover/create reasons/meaning for things. The mind has trouble handling random luck. Lucky people tend to feel they deserve their luck and unlucky people tend to think the same thing, even when it's not the case.

That's why poker is easier in small doses. Poker as a hobby is better on the psyche than poker as a career.

Miller plays poker now only as a hobby. He plays about one day a week for fun, to test out theories, and to keep his hand in the game. But he earns most of his income from his books and his website, though he's fundamentally an entrepreneur. Miller, in The Fan's estimation, will always have his hand in a few different pots, earning money from a variety of sources.

The Fan thinks the best poker players are entrepreneurs who play poker sometimes, but not all the time. They are people who desire personal freedom, conquering challenges, and creating wealth in various forms. They're not the kind of people who think lots of money is worth lots of stress. When poker gets too stressful, they find a new gig.

*Not all the time, though. There can be multiple winners at the same table and they can root for each other, but when they've all got money in the pot they want to win, it's every player for him or her self.

The lower the level, the simpler the blog. The lower the level, the more possible readers. The lower the level, the more accessible the website is to people with poor English skills (be they native English speakers or not). As another blogger puts it,

The Fan's Response to RGP Haters

Someone sent the fan an email and asked for a response regarding an RGP thread about our hero, Ed Miller. The thread is an attack on Miller's character, which is par for the course at RGP, and normally the best response is none at all. Slander and libel should usually just be ignored, but there are a few points this fan would like to make in response:

The section of the book was a typo. Miller has said as much in his errata list on TwoPlusTwo. The fan thinks the typo has been fixed, but if the second printing of the book was published with the same mistake, that's Mason Malmuth's (the publisher) fault. Check the second printing.

That's on Sklansky. If you think Sklansky didn't work hard enough on a book he put his name on, that's Sklansky's fault, not Miller's.

And Sklansky's name comes first on that book, so whatever gripes you have about the book content should be with Sklansky first and Miller second. You might even want to include the publisher, Mason Malmuth, since it's his responsibility to edit the books.

The fan thinks that the fan has some insider knowledge about how that book was written and let's just say that most of the hard work was done by Miller, as a sort of ghost-writer. But almost all of the concepts in the book came from Sklansky. From the fan's perspective, Miller didn't want to write the book and really only did it because he knew it would be profitable.

The fan thinks you could criticize the hell out of that book and Miller wouldn't care much because he doesn't have anything invested in it. It's sort of like if you criticized other poker books for which Miller wrote the indexes or if you criticized other poker books that Miller edited. Who cares? It was like a fee-for-hire job, not a timeless piece of art.

The fan considers No Limit Hold'em: Theory and Practice Ed Miller's first co-authored book. And the fan believes Miller is best when he writes alone. He's a much stronger writer than most other poker authors.

The only reasons, in the fan's opinion, Miller includes other authors in some of his books are:
a) to sell more books because people may respect or recognize other poker authors more than Miller.
b) to write about different and more complex poker topics. Miller is an expert on low and mid stakes limit hold'em. He's a solid player in no-limit, but he's not yet an expert. Writing with other authors lets Miller's books include advanced concepts.

Ed Miller, in the fan's perspective, is first and foremost a writer/teacher and secondly a poker/game player. The fan thinks Miller will be a respected teacher in other fields, too, not just poker.

More criticisms from the RGP guy:

Poker isn't just for the cardroom, folks. It's about profitable play elsewhere, too. Keep your head in the game, play fair, and come out a winner.

Why is Ed Miller so awesome? Because he says stuff like this:

"...beginning March 4, 2008 the IRS will require tournament directors to withhold taxes from poker tournament winners who win in excess of $5,000
"... it would seem from Section 2 of the bulletin that it applies only to those prizes that exceed the entry fees by $5,000. So if you enter the main event of the WSOP for $10,000 and place 583rd to win an $11,500 prize, you won’t have withholding because your prize exceeds your entry fee by only $1,500.

"..Since poker has become high profile over the past few years, I think the IRS has spent and will spend more time and resources to take its pound of flesh from the game. US tax law is very unfavorable to gamblers, and this new policy is simply an extension of the old unfair policies."

If Ed Miller ran the twoplustwo website he would turn it into the best poker website of all time. He said he'd do these things:

"On the poker part, I'd install a CMS and immediately prioritize marketing the books. I'd kill the online magazine in its current form and hire a group of writers to do daily-updated strategy articles. Then I'd start adding web apps and utilities... basic stuff like hand converters and equity calcs first, and then a few other more advanced tools I'm thinking of writing for my own site. I'd ditch UBB and whatever new solution I went with, I'd expand the profile-building features so that people could build their own mini poker-related myspace-like pages where they could post their tournament wins (or have them slurped automatically from online repositories), link to friends, etc." (source: his comments at this post)

Wow! Those sound like excellent improvements! Imagine that kind of poker website with so much available, it could really be a one-stop shop. It would have everything except the actual gaming (he'd probably want that too if it weren't illegal in the US and Nevada specifically, where twoplustwo is).

So, the obvious question is, why isn't he doing that on his own website?
The fan doesn't know, but here are some possible explanations:

He's too busy with other projects
He doesn't feel his website readership is ready to expand to that point
He doesn't have the investment capital or would rather use it for other projects
He sincerely wants twoplustwo to improve and change

Why doesn't Ed Miller have a copy of his own book yet? He wrote,

"Professional No-Limit Hold ‘em: Volume I is finally printed and available for buying! I haven’t seen a flesh-and-blood copy yet, but I will soon, and I’m excited."

Just guessing, but Ed probably doesn't have a copy because Mason Malmuth, Miller's publisher, is acting like a little baby and is has a grudge against Miller and his wife, Elaine, who disagrees with the sexism and pornography on the Two Plus Two poker forums.

I wonder if Miller will have to buy his own copy at the bookstore.

But some readers say they've seen it and there's a thread on Two Plus Two already reviewing it. Comments in the thread include:

"I've read through the Basics chapters and have to say I am impressed so far. It is concise enough not to be a chore and still contains a lot of good information. I have high hopes for the rest of the book..."

"A lot of the information in this book has not been seen in such a user friendly format in any of the bazillion poker books I have read. This is a very high quality book with critical concepts for mastering 'stack limit' holdem I can already give this book a wayyyyyyyyyy thumbs up and I still have half left to read."

"I really did learn a ton from the second half of the book, which will hopefully make me lots of money in the future."

"This book will do a good job of helping to turn marginal players into successful ones. The ideas presented of REM, commitment, and stack to pot ratios do an excellent job of describing how to eliminate some huge flaws I have seen in other players. As a mid limit pro, I was already aware of these concepts in a vague form, but as described they really helped me understand them in theory and practice."

However, most of the discussion isn't about the book content. Instead, it's about how the back cover misspells Portuguese as "Portugeses." This, sadly, is par for the course at the Two Plus Two forums where the signal to noise ratio is low. This fan thinks that the amount of good poker strategy on those forums is far outweighed by the gossip and bad poker strategy.

Mason Malmuth apologized for the mistake and admitted the same mistake was made on three other TwoPlusTwo books. Another typo can be found as well: "Two Plus Two" was written as "Two Plus two."

Rumor has it the mistakes are due to Two Plus Two's use of a substandard magazine printer rather than a book printer to print the books. This explains why the books use a thicker than standard paper and why the books are said to "fall apart." But regardless of the book publishing process, the content speaks for itself.

Ed Miller Takes Poker Seriously, As A Game Of Skill. That's Why He Doesn't Play Tournaments

Ed Miller doesn't play poker tournaments. He plays cash games.

Ed Miller plays poker for money, not for status or trophies or praise. Ed Miller is a poker professional, not a gambler. In fact, he's relatively risk averse. Miller's not the guy who will win big at the poker tables and then take that money over play roulettes or go on a shopping spree. Miller makes money, he doesn't flaunt it. Ed Miller takes poker seriously, as a game of skill and as an income generator.

Poker tournaments* are not like tennis championships or chess matches. Poker tournaments are not good measure of poker skills. Poker is a game of both luck and skill whereas tennis and chess are almost purely skill. The luck factor is larger in poker tournaments than in cash games. That is, tournaments are riskier than cash games. Tournaments are worse bets than cash games.

Poker tournament players are like day traders while poker cash game players are like value investors. Tournament prize structures are long-shots, like the lottery**, whereas cash games are short odds, like investing in a mutual fund. This is why many tournament players do not invest their own money to play the tournament and instead are sponsored by big name poker businesses. (And why you see so many poker tournament players wear hats or T-shirts that promote poker businesses.)

Cash games offer more flexibility. Ed Miller has played a few tournaments in the past, and he's done well, but he hates playing them. He says they take too much time and aren't worth the effort. Miller started playing poker because being a professional poker player allows him to be his own boss, to set his own schedule, and to work fewer hours. Tournaments are the opposite of that. They have their own tournament schedules. Tournaments are often long workdays, such as 10 to 15 hour days. As a poker tournament player, you can't leave a poker tournament for a few hours to take a shower or go on a date, you must stay in the tournament. Additionally, many poker tournaments are run by people who do not have experience or skill in running poker tournaments.

To recap, poker cash games are better measures of poker competence than tournaments because:

Cash games require more skill and less luck; tournaments require more luck and less skill
Cash games are less financially risky than poker tournaments
Cash games are more flexible than tournaments, affording the professional poker player more freedom to be his or her own boss; tournament players are often "horses" in big business bets and thus have less freedom as sponsored players

Ed Miller values poker skill and personal freedom, which is why he plays poker cash games rather than tournaments.

"Whenever you bet the pot, you're getting even odds on your opponent folding. Ed Miller is in Las Vegas. Will he play in the World Series of Poker or will he play in the cash games?

This fan bets Ed Miller will play the cash games. Why? A few reasons:

Cash games are profitable. Cash games during tournaments are filled with the people who busted out of the tournament. They are bigger, fatter fish than normal. They've just played for hours and hours so their concentration isn't as good. And they're beating themselves up for getting knocked out or they're trying to prove something. Either way, they're not playing as well as they should.
Cash games offer more flexibility. Miller has said he prefers cash games because he likes the flexibility. He's on vacation in Las Vegas. He probably doesn't want to work 10-14 hour days playing a tournament. He'd probably rather chill out and rake in the dough at the cash games playing 2-4 hours at a time. Maybe he'll spend the rest of the time enjoying Las Vegas.
Ed Miller is modest. He doesn't have anything to prove. He doesn't need to tell the world he's a poker superstar. Smart people figure out Ed Miller's a strong poker player without needing a TV show or magazine to tell them.
Tournaments are more risky than cash games. The way tournaments are played is very different from how cash games are played. The result is that an entry fee into a tournament has a low shot of making a lot of money while the same entry fee amount has a high chance at doubling or tripling in a cash game (when played by a skilled player). In general, tournaments involve more luck than cash games do.
Ed Miller is a poker pro, not a gambler. In fact, he tends to shy away from high risk. He's not the guy who will win big at the poker tables and then take that money over play roulettes. Here's the analogy: Poker tournament players are day traders while poker cash game players are Warren Buffet type of investors. Ed Miller and Warren Buffet have some things in common.

Gary Carson, Mason Malmuth, & Criticisms of Ed Miller

On Gary's blog he wrote, "...Ed’s an engineer."

Sort of. Ed Miller was a software engineer for a short period of time. He has two degrees, one in Electrical Engineering and one in Physics. But really, Ed Miller is a writer and teacher. His knowledge and talents run the gamut, but Miller's passion, as he's described it, is "learning and teaching." And he demonstrates a passion for writing.

Even still, Carson wrote,

"Now that I’ve just criticized the hell out of the post, it is a pretty good post and worth a read." [emphasis added]

On another subject, Gary Carson wrote, "Ed Miller has always supported Mason" in the comments over at Ed Miller's poker blog.

I wonder if Gary's criticisms of Ed have more to do with Gary's frustrations with Mason Malmuth than with anything truly related to Ed Miller. If so, Carson should note that Miller left two plus two and is no longer Mason's whipping boy or crony. (Seems that TT has taken on that role in Ed's absence.)

Why do I care? Well it's sad when someone can't differentiate between people. Mason Malmuth can't differentiate between Snyder and his wife, or Ed Miller and his wife. And Carson can't differentiate between Miller and Malmuth. It's just sad, particularly for people who make money by noticing subtle differences.

Ed Miller is respectful, polite, and cautious. He's unlikely to censor criticism no matter how undeserved. And he openly welcomes deserved, constructive criticism. Ed Miller is nothing like Mason Malmuth. The only thing they have in common is good fortune and success.

Mason Malmuth takes a cheap shot at Ed Miller

Mason Malmuth titled a post "Big Problems with Ed Miller" on twoplustwo. But the post wasn't about Miller, it was about Miller's last book with David Sklansky and Arnold Snyder's wife's criticism of the book. It really had nothing to do with Ed Miller.

Mason Malmuth even commented that it was just a ploy for attention:

"We’re nearly done with Volume 1. In the next week or two, we’ll put the finishing touches on the manuscript...A couple of months after that, the book should be printed and available to buy. I’d guess that the first books will hit the street in late March or April."
